New jobs numbers from Statistics Canada show a sharp decline in the unemployment rate for the National Capital Region.

Overall, the rate dropped to 4.4% in April, down from 4.8% in March for both sides of the river.

The majority of the gains were on the Ottawa side, with a labour force increase of 3,000. That dropped the Ottawa-specific unemployment rate to 4.2% down from 4.9%.

In Gatineau, the unemployment rate was up slightly to 4.8% in April, from 4.7%.

Nationwide, Canada lost a net 1,100 jobs, but the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.8%

The overall decline in the number of jobs last month was so small that Statistics Canada did not consider it statistically significant. The agency says the economy produced 28,800 full-time jobs last month and shed 30,000 part-time positions.
