The Sobeys grocery business will be cutting about 800 office jobs across Canada.
Sobey's C-E-O, Michael Medline, says the job cuts are part of efforts to create one national organization out of five regional businesses.
Medline says only office employees are affected by Friday's announcement.
Besides the Sobeys banner, the company operates Safeway stores in western Canada and the FreshCo discount brand.
“The first phase of our plan to transform our business, which has been focused on resetting the foundation of Sobeys and creating a new organization structure, is now substantially complete," Medline said in a statement.
"The work to restructure the Company is fundamentally changing our operating model from a collection of five regional businesses to one, national organization....The creation of a smaller structure with fewer jobs has impacted our office employees only. The decisions that we have made to date will result in the departure of approximately 800 people from Sobeys offices across the country."
