Ottawa Public Health could be taking part in a pilot project that will see five new vending machines set up across the city.
The vending machines would carry clean needles and crack pipes.
Public Health said the goal of the machines is to reduce the transmission of HIV, Hepatitis-C and other drug related viruses among drug users in the capital.
The machines, known as harm reduction dispensing units, would be set up at five sites in the downtown area.
HRDUs were first used in Denmark and Norway in the 1980s and are being used in Vancouver.
The pilot project would be funded by the Ontario government.
