A natural gas-fired cauldron will mark the start of Canada's 150th birthday here in Ottawa.
An early-evening family celebration on New Year's Eve at city hall will be marked by the lighting of the three-sided flame at Marion Dewar Plaza at city hall.
It's an artistic interpretation of the Ottawa 2017 logo, will be about five meters high and four meters wide.
The cauldron will only burn until New Year's Day.
But it will be re-lit for special events throughout the year.
