River Ward Councillor Riley Brockington says a community safety meeting in Carlington was a success.
There have been three homicides in the Carlington area this year, and multiple shootings, including the latest one on Saturday night.
Residents heard information about the importance of crime reporting and neighborhood watches.
Brockington says one of the issues he touched on was the former Suya Spot restaurant - which closed following the homicide of Abdi Jama in September.
"We don't cheer a business closing but certainly the community had had enough ... and now that the dust is settled there, the intention now is to reengage with the landlord and talk about the types of programs or particularly services as a business - what would be a good fit for Carlington."
Ottawa Police had called the Suya Spot a "magnet" for criminal activity.
Brockington says the meeting also brought forth several ideas as to how the community can respond to the crime that has taken place in the neighborhood.
"People were reminded that there are ways to get involved. Whether it be to report to crimestoppers or through bylaw or police, the value of neighborhood watch, and what purpose of neighborhood watch is and ways to get involved."
