The number of red light cameras in Ottawa is set to nearly double.
There are 33 red light cameras in operation throughout the city, and 20 more are coming. The first of these will be unveiled Monday morning at the corner of St. Joseph Boulevard and Old Tenth Line Road.
Mayor Jim Watson, Transportation Committee Chair Councillor Keith Egli, and Orléans Councillor Bob Monette will be there at 10:30 a.m. to unveil the new camera.
Increasing the number of red light cameras in Ottawa was a campaign pledge of Watson’s during the last municipal election.
Tickets for out-of-province drivers are also coming. Ontario changed the law this year to allow the city to ticket out-of-province vehicles for red light infractions caught on camera.
City staff say it won’t be until early next year before a process is in place to do so.
