The provincial Ministry of the Environment has given approval to Waste Management to take in construction and demolition garbage from west Quebec at its Carp Road landfill.
The waste will go to the landfill's sorting facility before being transferred elsewhere.
The move comes despite opposition from the City of Ottawa, which had complained that Waste Management had provided no notice of the proposed change.
The city's Public Works Manager, Kevin Wylie, also added, in a letter to the ministry, that Waste Management had assured Ottawa officials that there would be enough waste generated in Ottawa and Lanark county to keep the dump busy.
However provincial environmental officials say the decision will not result in more waste being transported to the facility, since an overall limit of 4,000 tonnes per day remains in effect.
