The Rideau Canal: Then and Now

What started as an eight-part summer series in the Ottawa Citizen by Ron Corbett was transformed into a book by local photographer and publisher John McQuarrie, just in time for the 175th anniversary of the Rideau Canal, and its designation as Canada's 14th World Heritage Site.

Part travelogue, part historical novel, The Rideau Canal Then and Now tells the story of Lt. Col. John By and the building of the Rideau Canal, while at the same time takes readers on a modern-day tour of the Canal. From the beauty of the Rideau Lakes, to the poignant stories of aging fishing guides, Ron paints a masterful picture of the Canal as it was and is today.

"There have been many books written about the Rideau Canal in its 175 years, but if you buy only one, this is the one to get. Corbett and McQuarrie take you along on a memorable ride through the lock/lake system from Ottawa to Kingston, painting the Canal's magnificence with a combination of archival and contemporary photographs and paintings and historical notes. Corbett's warm narrative also introduces the reader to local characters and those who work along the system." Mike Gillespie, The Ottawa Citizen

The Last Guide: A Story of Fish and Love

The story of Frank Kuiack, the last full-time fishing guide in Algonquin Park, became a bestseller when it was published by Penguin Books Canada in 2001. Frank's story -- how he built a life in the wilderness, quit drinking, fell in love with his wife, Marie -- was a hit with readers for both its beauty and its message.

Re-issued this summer -- with updated chapters and new photos by Julie Oliver -- the Last Guide remains one of the best fishing stories you'll ever read.

"A homage to a vanishing way of life" -- The Toronto Star

"Wonderful. . .both engaging and descriptive, and the story itself is an absolute page turner." The Kitchener-Waterloo Record

"The Last Guide is a tale that will not only hook you, but will feed the soul forever." Roy MacGregor (Author of Canadians: Portrait of a Country and its People.)

243 pages, full colour, 5 1/2" by 8" $22.00 (ISBN:1-894673-05-0) in soft cover and $35.00 (ISBN:1-894673-04-2) in hard cover.

Should there be an independent investigation of claims by Canadian Diplomat Richard Colvin that he told officials at Foreign Affairs and at least one General at National Defence about detainee torture in Afghanistan, but was told to stop talking and writing about it?
